Art or die! Ugh. Sounds so dramatic. As I write this, the only thing I can really think about is: How do I create a life where I am making art? And yes, how do I survive, make money, put food on the table, and pay my bills, all while making art as a living?
This seems like a dreadful experiment. But I suppose life is an experiment. So, if you are reading this right now, join me in this experiment.
Artsy Boss is the name of this blog. I want to go on a journey. A journey towards creating a life where I can create art and travel, and work from anywhere at any time.
I would rather work at 3 am (because I choose to) than have a nine-to-five.
So here it is. Here is this post. I am writing it for the world to see. So, I have some accountability.
But what is my medium? What type of art do I do?
For starters, I’m a writer, so blogging is right up my alley. But I also grew up painting and drawing. I even studied graphic design because I thought that would be a more marketable way of getting a job and not being a starving artist.
I never got a job as a graphic designer. But maybe with this blog, I can experiment and see where it goes.
Next Steps for a True Artist?
I think it’s vital to make goals. Otherwise, I won’t get anywhere with this. So how about we set a goal (and if you are reading this, feel free to set one, too)?
But, let’s not burn ourselves out. Let’s not create an unattainable goal that will only make us more stressed and miserable. After all, misery is where we are right now.
Let’s change our life and create art. Because when you start at zero. There is only one way to go. And that’s up!
So, if I can teach you anything through my mistakes and epiphanies or maybe show you how to do certain things step by step with this blog, then I’ve done my job.
A True Artist Lives and Breathes Art
If you are like me, you understand that you live for art. You love it, you want to create it, and you don’t see any way of living other than making it.
But why not just create it. After all, can we make art without getting money for it? Unfortunately, in the society we’ve created, we must play by specific rules. And if I put my hat in this ring, I will play by my own rules. Rules that say I can be an artist and make money from art. To live, not just survive.
So, What Will Our Goals Be?
As a writer and artist, my life goal has always been to write part-time, create art in the form of graphic design part-time, and travel the world. That is my ultimate goal.
So, where am I now? Do you want the dirty truth? The truth is, I’ve been freelance writing since the pandemic started, and although it is currently a part-time gig, I’m still struggling.
So how about I make my own dream come true? The dream that says I can be a writer and an artist and still travel the world. I want to have a life without worrying about whether my old shoes will continue to fall apart and buy new ones without worrying about the cost. Because a starving artist is a cute fantasy. But it’s a fantasy I’ve lived for too long.
